The health improvement role of our fire and rescue services
Recently published reports about the wider public health workforce, from the Centre for Workforce Intelligence and the Royal Society for Public Health, highlighted fire and rescue services as a group who have the opportunity, skills and enthusiasm to improve the health and well-being of the population. This week we signed a consensus document with the Chief Fire Officers Association, NHS England, the Local Government Association and Age UK to support the further development of this work.
Antibiotic Guardian campaign
We’ve published details of new ways to interact with the campaign – professional roadshows and public debates.
Week of Action - #BestStart0to19
Monday saw the start of a week of action, focusing on getting the best start possible for children and young people. Take a look at @VivJBennet’s blog which was updated throughout the week.
Smoke Free Cars
It is illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicle) with anyone under 18. The law changed on 1 October, to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
World Rabies Day
We supported World Rabies Day on Monday 28th September. The World Health Organization estimates rabies causes over 55,000 deaths per year globally, many of these in children.
Older People's Day
October 1st was Older People's Day, and we launched Get Up and Go, a guide to falls prevention in association with @sagaUK and @thecsp . The guide helps people to assess their own risk of suffering a fall, advice on getting up from falls and what to do if you can't, as well as tips to modify homes to be safer.
Mental wellbeing of children and young people
This week our Mental Health Intelligence Network published a new resource highlighting the importance of local organisations measuring and acting to improve the mental wellbeing of children and young people.
Dementia
On Friday we published a literature review which examines how common dementia is, and how it varies between populations.
