Stay Well This Winter
On Thursday we launched our Stay Well this Winter campaign with NHS England, starting with the national flu vaccination programme. This year the flu vaccine programme is being extended to children in school years 1 and 2, and aims to help 3 million children between the ages of 2 and 6. You can get a free flu jab if you are pregnant, 65 or over or under 65 with a long term health condition. NHS Choices have more information on eligibility and you can get more information about the vaccine by watching our film.
Cold weather plan
Along with the Stay Well this Winter campaign, our cold weather plan for 2015/16 was launched on Thursday. It contains information on how to avoid harm caused by the cold.
National Cholesterol Month
October marks Cholesterol Month which is led by HEART UK. We published a blog on the importance of the NHS Health Check which offers an opportunity for those aged 40-74 to have a check-up, which includes measuring cholesterol amongst other things such as blood pressure and diabetes risk.
A whole systems approach to obesity
The obesity epidemic in England poses a challenge that is very clear- it's damaging our health and our health services. We published a blog this week on how we need to design a ‘whole systems approach’ to prevent and tackle obesity.
Antibiotic Guardian
We continue to urge everyone - health professionals/leaders, patients and the public - to sign up to become an antibiotic guardian and share the campaign on social media.
Global Hand washing Day
We supported Global Hand Washing Day on social media and had a blog published on the Longitude prize website from our deputy chief nurse, who discussed how hand washing is a top defence against illness and drug resistance.
E-cigarettes - what we know
Our National Director for Health and Wellbeing, professor Kevin Fenton, wrote a blog for Huffington Post UK this week which talks through the evidence we have on e-cigarettes following our evidence review published in August.
