Ruth Simmons

Ruth Simmons is an epidemiologist with PHE, leading on the sentinel surveillance of blood-borne virus testing, and within the health protection research unit leading on work to map the cascade of care for BBV through data linkage. Prior to this position, Ruth was the lead scientist for the UK HIV and AIDS reporting system with specific interest in work to identify recent HIV infections and transmitted drug resistance. Ruth has a Masters in epidemiology from LSHTM, and has recently completed a PhD with the MRC CTU at UCL, estimating HIV incidence in Ukraine, Poland and Estonia. Ruth was also a member of the WHO working group on HIV Incidence Assays, developing technical guidelines for determining HIV incidence using case-based surveillance data and recent infection testing algorithm.
