PHE Conference Day 1

Our 2016 national conference took place at the University of Warwick this week, bringing together over 1400 professionals for presentations, debates, posters and networking.

The event was opened by chief executive Duncan Selbie, who used his speech as an opportunity to praise the quality of science and scientists in the UK as well as outlining some issues that he feels will characterise coming years including improving air quality, worklessness and childhood obesity.

This was followed by a video message from Minister for Public Health and Innovation Nicola Blackwood, who flagged recent public health achievements including adult smoking rates at a record low, teen pregnancy at the lowest level for 40 years & the Diabetes Prevention Programme being rolled out across country.

The first day was closed with a lecture given by Sir David King, the Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on climate change. He spoke about the risks to humanity posed by climate change but argued that there are opportunities in managing the risks.

PHE Conference Day 2

Day 2 was kicked off by Professor Susan Jebb from the University of Oxford, who spoke about childhood obesity including a look at the latest data, the consequences of obesity and how England is addressing the problem.

After another packed day, the conference was closed by Chris Wormald, permanent secretary for the Department of Health who talked about making health policy against a background of an ageing population, advances in treatment/technology and rising public expectation.

There were a number of ways to get involved digitally and hundreds of delegates took to Twitter to join the discussion. Take a look at the #PHEConf16 hashtag for more information. You can view also view e-posters online or look at additional photos via our Instagram account.

We'd like to thank all those who attended and contributed to the 2016 conference for making it a successful and thought provoking event.

Diabetes data

We released new diabetes data this week which revealed 3.8 million people in England aged over 16 had diabetes in 2015, around 9% of the adult population. The data was achieved through a new diabetes prevalence model for local authorities and CCGs.

Blood pressure

This week was #KnowYourNumbers week. Professor Kevin Fenton blogged for Huffington Post about why it's so important you know these life-saving numbers.
